| [Tazz beats Briscoe. . In a wager war that is][Nov. 8, 2001] | |
| Tazz, the die-hard Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, now holds a 2-for-2 record over Brisco in betting on football games. Tazz's most recent collection came after the Nebraska Cornhuskers-Oklahoma Sooners game two weeks ago when Cornhuskers df. Sooners by a score of 20-10. |
|
| "We had a friendly wager and I'm a bit of a sore winner, so I had to rub it
in a little bit," Tazz said. Tazz added that "Gerry Brisco was very upset! J.R. and I didn't have a wager
on the game, but it seemed like he was kind of avoiding me at TV. So I went up to him and said, 'J.R. I just want
to shake your hand,' and he said, 'All right! All right!' And we both laughed. Then we talked about the game. It
was a hell of a game." Tazz wasn't able to catch the game live because of a family function he had to attend,
but like most football fans, he taped the game and gave it a look-see later. Tazz even went as far as shutting
his cell phone off and not checking his messages at home. "I didn't want anyone to tell me the score, I had
a bunch of messages at home and I told my wife to not touch the machine." Tazz couldn't miss his family happenings,
but he was upset that he wasn't able to see the game that featured Cornhuskers quarterback Eric Crouch catching
a pass from Mike Stuntz and taking it 63 yards for a touchdown to conclude the game. Tazz then explained why the
Sooners wern't successful that game. "A lot of their receivers were dropping balls, which cost them the game,"
Tazz said. "And then, of course, the trick play, where their quarterback dropped the ball and Crouch caught
the ball. It was like poetic justice." Tazz, also a New York Jets fan, has bet against Briscoe in the past.
Just last year when the Jets played against the Buccaneers, Tazz won another bet against Briscoe when the game
ended with Jets 21 and Buccaneers 17. With the way college football is going this year, we could end up seeing
the Cornhuskers vs. the Sooners again in the Big 12 Championship game. If this happens, Briscoe has demanded another
bet. Tazz said "I'd rather just leave on top and not bet anyone, but I have to give the guy a chance to make
his money back. The stakes will be a little higher. Beating OU twice in one season is tough to do. I don't know
what's going to happen in that game." Tazz went on to talk about why a man from the Red Hook Section of Brooklyn could possibly be a Nebraska fan. He even admitted that it didn't make any sense to him. "I couldn't tell you!" Tazz said. "As a kid, I always liked Nebraska. I can't make it make sense. I'm just a fan of theirs." Tazz, who was an offensive lineman, nose guard and linebacker in high school and college, said that as a kid, Nebraska "just grew on him." One of his two most favorite players was center Dave Rimington. Tazz recalls "He was jacked -- a monster and a great, great offensive lineman." His other favorite was running back Mike Rozier. "Great ballplayers came out of there. I've always liked them." And lastly, Tazz gave his comments on what he thought of the Cornhuskers this year. He was asked what he thought of Crouch winning the Heisman award. "This year, I'm not totally impressed with Crouch, to be honest. I think Dorsey should win the Heisman. If you at the stats, I don't think he's doing astronomically phenomenal. I wasn't impressed with him in the Oklahoma game. Big time players excel in big time games, and I don't think he excelled." Then he was asked about Crouch's chances on making it in the NFL. Tazz said "I think he'll do well. But a lot of guys who are great in college as quarterbacks go to the NFL and they don't excel. Peyton Manning is doing pretty well, but Ryan Leaf isn't doing too well. I thought Ryan Leaf was going to be the man. Look at (Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks) Gino Torretta and Andre Ware. These guys were playing Division I-A ball and were kicking ass. Then they go to the NFL and they can't. That shows you the difference. I can picture Crouch as a wide receiver or a kick returner. He might not be big enough to be a running back." Tazz then commented on middle linebacker, Jamie Burrow. "I'm a big fan of his. He is the cornerstone of that defense. He's phenomenal," Tazz answered. The final question was about the most unrecognized Cornhusker this year. "If you look at a guy who's underrated, look at outside linebacker Chris Kelsey. He tore up Oklahoma's offensive line. No one ever talks about him." Thanks to WWF.com for the headline story. You can find this in more detail on WWF.com by Jon Lane. |
